Ten Lessons I Have Learned as a School Leader

Leadership in schools is not about having all the answers. It is about holding space for others to grow, for challenges to unfold, and for oneself to remain rooted in purpose. Over the years, I have come to understand that leading with integrity and clarity helps build trust, encourages progress, and creates meaningful change. These ten lessons continue to guide me on my journey in school leadership.

  1. Leadership Begins with Knowing Your Why
A strong sense of purpose lies at the heart of good leadership. It is not about exerting control or authority. It begins with understanding the reason behind your actions and being able to communicate that purpose with sincerity and confidence.
  2. You Do Not Need to Do It All
In my early days, I believed that a strong leader had to solve every problem. Over time, I realised that real strength lies in empowering others. Asking thoughtful questions instead of offering immediate solutions helps build ownership and resilience within the team.
  3. Growth Happens When You Step Aside
Effective leadership involves creating an environment where others can find their way. It requires knowing when to offer guidance, when to provide challenge, and when to allow individuals to shine on their terms.
  4. Feedback Is a Tool for Growth, Not Judgement
Meaningful feedback must be clear, constructive, and actionable. Acknowledging progress, no matter how small, and celebrating effort as much as results can go a long way. Even difficult conversations, when approached with respect, can open doors to transformation.
  5. Listening Is a Leader’s Superpower
When your team faces a challenge, it helps to stay curious and listen without rushing to conclusions. Often, the visible issue is not the core problem. Genuine listening reveals what truly needs attention.
  6. Prepare During Calm Times for the Storms Ahead
When everything seems to be running smoothly, use that time to build the team’s confidence and independence. Encourage experimentation when the risks are low and involve others in decision-making. This helps them grow and prepares them for more difficult moments.
  7. Leadership Involves Emotional Labour
Leaders must manage their emotions while being present for others. This requires empathy, calmness, and the courage to be open. Sharing personal stories and struggles in the right moments helps build connection and trust.
  8. Share Your Story and Make Space for Theirs
Personal stories can inspire hope and show that growth is possible. At the same time, it is important to create room for others to express themselves. Listening with attention and care is just as powerful as speaking with intent.
  9. Be Clear in Vision and Open in Approach
Sometimes leadership calls for standing firm and confident in your decisions. At other times, it asks for flexibility and openness to different viewpoints. The key lies in knowing when to hold steady and when to adapt.
  10. Lead by Example Through the Values You Hope to See
At its core, leadership is about modelling the qualities we want teachers to bring into their classrooms. These include confidence, compassion, trust, and hope. When leaders live by these values, they create a school culture where both teachers and students are supported to grow and flourish.

Leadership in education is complex and often demanding. Yet, when grounded in purpose, guided by values, and shared with a committed team, it becomes a rewarding and transformative experience. We do not need to have everything figured out. We need the willingness to lead with clarity, courage, and compassion.
